Neurogenic Bladder

O’Neil Intermittent Catheter by LTR Medical

A neurogenic bladder is defined as lack of bladder control arising from a nerve problem such as a stroke, spinal cord injury, or tumour. The primary symptom is an uncontrollable loss of urine or urinary incontinence.

Treatment is aimed at periodic emptying of the bladder such as using intermittent catheterizations and/or drugs). Prompt treatment of this condition can help prevent permanent dysfunction and kidney damage and reduce the risk of urinary tract infections. Self-catheterization by the patient or intermittent catheterizationsadministered by a patient carer to trigger urination can help prevent urine from remaining too long in the bladder and causing problems.

The O’Neil Sterile Field Intermittent Urinary Catheter (ONS) is a single use disposable device which can be used to catheterize the patient without the need for an extensive sterile field. The catheter features an introducer tip, which is able to bypass the majority of organisms that exist at the opening of the urethra and this greatly reduces the risk of urinary tract infections occurring due to catheterization.

The principles of using intermittent catheterization are based on regular and complete emptying of the bladder to maintain a low bladder pressure and minimal residual urine volumes. This helps to secure bladder and renal health. Correctly performed intermittent catheter is a safe method suitable for long-term use, minimizing the risk of urological complications (e.g. those relating to bladder and kidney dysfunction, UTI, urethral strictures and male infertility) and improving a person’s quality of life.

The O’Neil urinary catheter is suitable for patients who have bladder dysfunction, specifically neurogenic bladder and non-neurogenic bladder disorders such as infravesical obstruction due to prostate enlargement, urethral strictures and post-operative urinary retention.
